A enormous satire of Victorian England and most especially Victorian era Hollywood movies. Lots of laughs in most novel settings. Who would have guessed Bismark would construct such a funny subject? Hard to imagine why this has taken so long to beget it to DVD. The only thing too disappointing about this movie is that it was the only one done to date from the immortal Flashman series, certainly Flashman in Afghanistan would be very timely and on target today, but at least the author Fraser and the director teamed up again on the Three Musketeer movies. I’ll be tickled to challenge to a duel anyone who dares to inquire of my devotion to the books as long as they allow my friend to load the pistols.

Two large actors, Macolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Time After Time) and Oliver Reed (Tommy) are at their best in this hilarious movie. It’s based on Otto von Bismarck’s rise to power in Germany and a not-so-heroic English hero Thomas Flashman (McDowell) .

Flashman, who gained fame after being found unconscious draped in the Union Jack, had actually been trying to swagger it down to appease Afghani invaders. The movie begins with his reach dash from a gambling risqué house (in suitable Victorian style, the women daringly showing their petticoats) . After goading Bismarck into a hilarious boxing match in which Bismarck is beaten amusing by one of “the lower orders.” Bismarck swears to remember Flashman as Flahsh laughs gleefully at the mayhem he arranged. Later Bismarck lures and then kidnaps Flashman into posing as German count because the sincere one has caught “Cupid’s Measles” and can’t abet his possess wedding. In humor typical of the movie, Flashman is captured after the woman he expects to sleep with is replaced by an overweight stranger. After momentary surprise, Flashman says “well, since you’re here,” and proceeds with the task until stopped.

Flashman makes a hilarious cowardly hero as he barely manages to shine after a cowardly or vice-inspired act. Particularly comic and recent is the poking fun of Victorian morals. The movie also has some advantageous scenery, including and a lovely segment with Wagnerian overture at the beginning of a hunt (”have the doggies found the boar yet”) . A tremendous and underappreciated actor, Oliver Reed does an satisfactory job of the very serious Otto von Bismarck. It’s only too unpleasant that more movies like this weren’t made. Flashman serves as the perfect anti-hero type that we so miss from the shroud these days.

Michael Landon was the writer, star and executive producer of this drama series. Landon plot the bar for excellence so high that no one in the past 30 years has near conclude to the accomplishments of “Miniature House On The Prairie.”

It is rather sorrowful that TV has gone contrivance downhill compared to the days of “Small House On The Prairie.” But we level-headed have all the glorious episodes preserved on DVD.

I have seen every single episode of this series (thanks to TBS, because the first-run series was years before I was born) and I noticed that some of the episodes included clips that were not on the syndicated version. These are very short, but noticeable if you are a longtime watcher and fan like myself.

Some of the very best episodes from this season include: A Harvest of Friends, Country Girls, If I Should Wake Before I Die, and Christmas at Plum Creek.

Here is a chunky episode listing and description of every episode that is included in the Season One box set:

I am so glad I beget this season on DVD. And, I thought on getting more of the “Itsy-bitsy House On The Prairie” DVD box sets. Please know that the Season One box position does not include the modern pilot movie of “Microscopic House On The Prairie.” That is sold separately. I suspect that is because the current pilot movie was not actually allotment of the first-run series but more of a movie as it did not ever appear in syndication. Speaking of syndication, I hope TBS will bring encourage “Puny House On The Prairie.” Until a couple of years ago it was shown twice daily. This is such a improbable reveal for all generations. It is a classic!

The first season of “Diminutive House On the Prairie” is an profitable example of what a smaller independent distributor can do for television shows on DVD. Choose a classic note like “The Mary Tyler Moore Point To”, for instance: it’s first season was released by mega-studio 20th Century Fox in September 2002. Ten months later, we level-headed don’t even know if Fox will release the rest of the series due to unpleasant sales and the fact that they are busied with franchises like “24″, “The Simpsons” and “The Shield”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Little House on the Prairie – The Complete Season 1! Click Here

Enter Goldhil Home Media, a smaller company who I wish held more distribution properties than it does. Because, simply do, it makes the best of what it does have. Case in point, releasing two blooming 6-disc season sets of “Shrimp House On the Prairie” on the same day in July. Further assuring us that we’re not wasting our money on a series we know will never be completed, they’ve included a message in the episode guides/booklets stating that seasons 3 and 4 are coming soon. Now that’s awesome.

Did I mention these sets are pleasing? Each disc features a member of the Ingalls family against a handsome blue sky and golden prairie. The handy booklet gives a rundown of every episode. The menus are enormous and play the classic theme song until you steal an episode (4 eps per disc) . The opening theme only appears over the first episode on each disc but the demolish titles are included for every episode. Unless you obsess over the opening theme for some reason, this is not a immense deal.

The negate of the expose itself is large. They’ve restored and remastered the fresh material and it looks and sounds better than you’ve ever seen it on television. To quote the booklet: “The vintage material included is this Special Collector’s Edition has been restored using state-of-the-art color correction, recount enhancement and noise reduction technologies.”

I’m only through the first disc (having impartial found this at a retail store 3 days before its expected release date) and have found plenty of heart-warming moments and can bid that there will be many more hardships for the Ingalls family before the first season concludes. As soon as I am able, I opinion to empty my pockets for the season 2 box station. From there, I’ll be anxiously awaiting the release day for seasons 3 and 4. Goldhil Home Media has certainly won me over and proven that the indie distributors really tend to savor their properties and treat them with all the respect they deserve.

Note: The 2-hour pilot episode is not included on this plot, as it was urge as a TV movie before the series was state in stone. The gracious news is that Goldhil is releasing the pilot separately on the same day! As is, the series picks up with the episode entitled “A Harvest of Friends”, in which the Ingalls have objective moved from Kansas to Walnut Grove, MN.

This DVD is one of those small, unknown, “Beatle-Surprises” that pop up once in a blue moon (with the upcoming CirqueduSoliel Soundtrack coming up as the “next-big-thing”) … I assume myself to be quite the Beatles’ completionist and I had never seen the majority of these interviews in their entirety and remarkable less in such pristine quality… As stated by other reviewer; A must-have! … Worth the stamp of admission alone is the lengthy Bonus-Feature with everything and more concerning “We’re More Accepted than Jesus” issue… Watching those teenagers be interviewed in a represent shop was a major nostalgia hump (to gape those walls adorned with the “latest releases” like in the olden days!) … Glean this one!

This very affordable DVD is surpringly paunchy of rare Beatles footage, newsreels, and interviews. Even though there is no Beatle music in “From Liverpool to San Fransisco” (if you want to hear Beatle songs in graceful Dolby Digital 5.1 sound I run you to bag the Beatles Anthology DVD box status), the material will retain you glued to your TV from commence to accomplish.

I highly recommend “From Liverpool to San Francisco” to anyone who wants to expand his / her knowledge of the greatest band in Rock n Roll history. The DVD is well produced, has righteous to estimable audio / video quality, and covers a lot of ground. The bonus footage includes a fairly in depth explore at the 1966 “greater than Jesus” controversy, complete with interviews with teenagers in Memphis, Tenn. Awesome stuff for you Beatles historians out there. You need this!

This video gets five stars and I highly recommend it because:

* it’s beautifully filmed and narrated

Buy,Download, Or Stream Empires – Islam: Empire of Faith! Click Here

* it has a wealth of information in it

* it’s a suited overview of the birth of Islam and the Empire that was built by the Muslims from the 7th to the 16th centuries.

* it’s totally hard to halt watching once you launch!

However, please trace that the title is misleading: This is not about Islam. In fact, aside from the conception in one God, the beliefs of Islam are not discussed or explained at all. That’s okay — but the video doesn’t beget definite the distinction between Islam and the Islamic empire.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Empires – Islam: Empire of Faith! Click Here

It’s like the dissimilarity between the Holy Roman Empire and Christianity. The ones ruling were Christians, but that doesn’t mean that all their practices followed the tenets of Christianity. Similarly, although this is about the Islamic empire (including the Ottomans), not everything that the rulers did was Islamic (killing anyone for the sole reason that he has a claim to power is abolish in Islam, but this is something some Ottomans did, anyway) . So in watching this, please support in mind that this video is describing an empire that was based on the Islamic faith, but which contained well-behaved and dreadful elements, objective like any other empire in the world. Most of all, please do not steal that all that happened in history was sanctioned by Islam. Most rulers throughout the centuries have belonged to some religion, but it doesn’t mean that they always complied with that religion.

That’s my only quibble — that the distinction is not made certain. Otherwise, this is an edifying source of information, the best video I’ve seen, about early Islamic culture and achievements. I do recommend it highly.

First the pleasant. This DVD is incredibly resplendent and Kingsley’s issue is absolutely splendid, he should relate more documentaries. The astronomical sweep of Islamic history is presented in a succinct and eloquent manner, with accompanying visuals that are involving. The record begins in the 6th century CE with the message of Muhammad’s strict monotheism. Struggling to fetch a foothold in Arabia, he eventually is victorious, conquers Mecca and gains thousands of followers. In one of the most spectacular rises of civilization in the history of man, Islam spreads its faith for thousands of miles from Western Europe to Central Asia. Muhammad’s message is simple and profound, he unites the various Arab tribes into one cohesive group under the banner of one God, smashing idols and reciting God’s words along the arrangement. Muhammad co-opted one of the greatest innovations of man: the big power of monotheism and its ability to unite disparate groups of people under a well-liked polity and society. The recent Arabic empire spreads swiftly throughout the peninsula, the Levant, Egypt, the Maghrib, Spain, Persia.

There is absolutely no doubt that Islamic civilization during the Middle Ages was spectacular, rich, and more advanced than European civilization. They preserved Greek philosophy and expanded upon it, developed geometry and discovered trigonometry, and adapted Indian numerals to a decimal system, greatly advancing mathematics. Art and architecture under the empire was simply glowing, breathtakingly blooming. Muslims also developed an anatomy that was passe for centuries afterward by Europe, discovered inoculation and formed the precursor to unique hospitals. The Islamic empire was so rich and distinguished it became a titanic threat to Christian Europe, who responded with the Crusades. Over one hundred years of conflict ensues in the Levant, until Saladin re-conquers and ends the Crusading campaigns. The epic of the Crusades is short, and not historically complete. It is also quite biased in its presentation of details.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Empires – Islam: Empire of Faith! Click Here

The rise and spread of the Ottoman Empire is narrated in the third installment. Their power, spread into Europe, their mammoth architecture, and their antagonism with the Iranian Safavid Empire are all included. By far the best fragment of this DVD is its telling of the life of Suleyman the Attractive. He was certainly an astonishing ruler and he receives his due attention in this documentary.

Now the abominable. This production is quite biased, sometimes subtly in its choice of pictures, other times not so subtly in its choice of language. What you will not hear about is the shocking nature of the Arabic conquest. While, according to this documentary the Muslims were led by a marvelous faith in God, the truth is many people were slaughtered in the conquests. Many thousands of Zoroastrian Persians were slaughtered; the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) were allowed to own their faith, but were subject to a special Muslim toll tax that did not apply to Muslims. They also were not allowed to proselytize, and their correct testimony was not as superior as their Muslim overlords. Many people were given only three options: conversion, death, or slavery. All peoples have conquered and slaughtered the Other; neither Muslims nor Christians are exempt from such behavior. Nonetheless, some Christians received more toleration than they had had under the Byzantine Empire. But the fact of the matter is that novel religious toleration was birthed in the European Enlightenment, not in the Middle East or West Asia. Muslims did effect worthy philosophy and learning, however many of the scholars working in Cordoba and Baghdad were Jews and Christians, albeit studying in composed cooperation with the Muslims. Paper was discovered via Chinese slaves brought into the empire, and the slave trade formed an integral portion of the economy of the Muslim lands. Although Muslims did not make slavery, which has been around since the dawn of civilization, they did innovate the African slave trade. Several times we hear about Europe “languishing in the Sunless Ages”. No serious historian uses the term Unlit Ages anymore, as the past decades have revealed a remarkable more complex and intellectually keen history. The term has been abandoned for the more appropriate Middle Ages, being as it is the bridge between the faded and novel worlds.

A expansive oversight is its short shrift of Iran. Iran is one of the centers of Islamic civilization, the center of Shiism, and a complex and piquant culture. The glory of the Safavid Empire and the beauty of its capital Isfahan are briefly mentioned, but there is no word on Shah Abbas, Iran’s ruler at the height of this empire.

Also, this DVD focuses on politics, not religion. You will not secure a deep conception of the myriad forms of Islamic faith in this documentary, certainly a key point of interest for some individuals. The Sufi dervishes were only very briefly mentioned, which is a shame because Sufism is a lively expression of Islamic mysticism, looked at with large suspicion by more conservative Muslims. Neither will you hear worthy detail about the schism between the Sunni and Shiites. The roots of this split are told, but the theological differences are not discussed. It was the development of Shiism that was a big impetus for the conversion of the Zoroastrian Persians to Islam, as it incorporated Zoroastrian ideas, merging the Saoshyant with the Hidden Imam to be revealed in later times.

So, it’s biased, but extremely aesthetic and informative. This could have been a four or five star documentary, but because of its political correctness it gets three.

If friendly films are like waking dreams, then genuine panic films are like waking nightmares. Few can match the power of Phantasm in this regard. Masquerading as a B-shocker, it gradually develops a kind psychological depth shared only by the best in the genre – films like The Exorcist and Silence of the Lambs.

To start with, the tale is frankly outrageous: after the death of a halt friend, two brothers (Mike and Jody, played by Michael Baldwin and Bill Thornbury) sight some unusual things about the Morningside Funeral Home where their friend – and their parents, who died two years earlier – are interred. It seems the dour funeral director (a character known only as The Expansive Man, indelibly rendered by Angus Scrimm) is not quite human. He’s able to assume fully occupied coffins by himself, as the younger Mike secretly observes; he bleeds yellow blood; he has a outlandish reaction to cold; and he is aided by dinky silver spheres that whisk the halls of the mausoleum, doing unspeakably frightening things to intruders. It seems his main activity, though, involves a modern spend of the corpses of the dearly departed – a expend we learn in the striking left-turn the film takes in the third act.

Somehow, what could have been a very funny film takes on an unnerving, Lynchian kind of surreality, thanks in gigantic measure to a well-developed subtext about abandonment, isolation, despair, and guilt. These are the anxieties that drive nightmares, and – despite the frequent humor throughout – writer/director Don Coscerelli infuses the proceedings with a poignant sense of sadness and awe. Like Herzog’s Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht, or Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Phantasm isn’t objective a scary film; it has the authentic texture of a shadowy, disturbing dream.

And this, in a film where a major sequence involves a gargantuan, obviously rubber insect flown around on a fishing line! It could have been a accurate Ed Wood moment, but instead, we purchase into it somehow. Extraordinary.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Phantasm! Click Here

In The Big Man, Angus Scrimm has created a classic fear film villain, in the Frankenstein’s monster/Dracula/Wolfman/Mummy sense, rather in than the Freddy/Jason tradition. There is no sense of irony in his notion or performance. No camp. No winking, wisecracking, or self-aware irony. Unbiased a worthy, implacable, contemptible presence.

Reggie Bannister rounds out the cast as a musician/ice cream vendor (!) who assists the brothers in their quest to rid the world (or at least their town) of the outrageous that has descended.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Phantasm! Click Here

The performances (a couple of minor characters notwithstanding) are remarkably skilled, walking that dazzling line between believability and exaggeration virtually demanded by the genre.

The DVD is crisp and well produced. There is a enjoyable introduction by The Gargantuan Man himself, Angus Scrimm, to bag things rolling. There is a ample deal of supplemental material to be found on the disc, and a thorough commentary track by Coscarelli, Scrimm, Baldwin, and Thornbury.

All told, an noble addition to any alarm fan’s collection.

“If this one doesn’t fright you, you’re already stupid.” Or so goes one of the taglines old in the promotions for PHANTASM, the 1979 low-budget film from auteur Don Coscarelli that has become a much-loved terror classic. By today’s standards, the film doesn’t quite come the level of awe promised by that slogan. But PHANTASM is nonetheless a well-made indie flick that has always been a accurate crowd-pleaser due to its enigmatic, unpredictable script; the ingenious and effective low-budget special FX; good directing and cinematography by Coscarelli; agreeable acting, especially from the four principals; and a very memorable, haunting obtain.

PHANTASM follows precocious 13-year-old Michael (Michael Baldwin), his older brother Jody (Bill Thornbury), and friend Reggie (Reggie Bannister) as they investigate the enigmatic goings-on at the creepy nearby funeral parlor. Unprejudiced who or what is that grisly Astronomical Man (Angus Scrimm) that seems to have the bustle of the set? What is his fragment in the fresh disappearance of corpses at the mortuary, and what is his relationship to the elfish eidolons lurking in the graveyard shadows?

PHANTASM’s script is loosely structured and rather ancient in spots, but this actually heightens the unpredictability of the station and thereby gives the film an unnerving surrealistic quality. And when combined with bizarre imagery (e.g., an airborne chromed sphere drilling into a human head) ; dim, atmospheric sets and on-location sites; and a genuinely creepy, inscrutable antagonist like the Immense Man, the movie transcends the script and evolves into a 90-minute spine-tingling nightmare-on-film.

The superior musical fetch also adds worthy to the nightmarish quality of PHANTASM. Detached by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave, it is stylistically reminiscent of John Carpenter’s derive for his groundbreaking film HALLOWEEN, released a year earlier. But unlike Carpenter’s one-man synthesizer earn, Myrow and Seagrave’s music is performed on multiple instruments, delivering a rich, three-dimensional sound that makes PHANTASM’s aural atmosphere seem distinguished more ominous than that of HALLOWEEN.

Though it has been over 20 years since its initial release, PHANTASM has feeble surprisingly well. As with its aforementioned predecessor HALLOWEEN, the gore is minimal, especially when compared to the wave of bloody panic films that splashed up on the cinematic shore in the 1980s and beyond. But the eerie, surreal ambiance of PHANTASM can unruffled create a viewer’s skin paddle, and the malignant Ample Man, with all his accursed accoutrements and paranormal paraphernalia, is aloof heavenly damned creepy. Yes, PHANTASM has a positive ineffable 1970s drive-in quality that identifies it as a product of its era, but rather than being an annoyance, this seems to add yet another layer of “otherworldliness”–at least from a contemporary standpoint.

MGM’s DVD release of PHANTASM offers the film in a non-anamorphic letterbox format in the film’s unique aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The digital transfer is delicate natty, with only moderate filmic and digital artifacts sometimes apparent. Colors are intellectual and sparkling, though darks are a bit on the muddy side. Soundtrack audio options include a fresh Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound remix, which sounds capable, or the film’s novel 2.0 mono.

The supplements on MGM’s DVD release of PHANTASM are outstanding. First off, the disc comes packaged with a very nice booklet that contains a mark from writer/director Don Coscarelli, as well as a myriad of curious tidbits about the film and its stars. On the disc itself, a really icy alternate audio track offers a feature commentary with Coscarelli and the film’s distinguished actors. Also included are outtakes, deleted scenes, trailers and TV spots, TV interviews with Coscarelli and Angus Scrimm, and remarkable more! These extras alone are worth the very reasonable retail ticket, but buyers rep the cold film, too!

To recap, PHANTASM is a minor cult classic that both ardent anxiety fans and casual viewers alike will come by genuinely luscious, and the loaded-with-extras DVD from MGM is nothing short of Phantastic!

It is not very often that a movie is widely spoken about before it is seen by the general public. “Praying with Lior” (First Rush Features) has been garnering praise for quite awhile now and if I had not heard about it around two months ago, I probably would not be aware as to what a grand film it is. I received an email from Rabbi Eugene Levy of Temple Bnai Israel in Runt Rock, Arkansas asking me if I had heard of the film. I had not but the very next day I got a pres release from Kelly Hargraves at First Hurry Films telling me that they had acquired the release rights. By this time I was really entertaining so I wrote Kelly and asked her to send me a screener. I received no respond so I waited a couple of weeks and wrote again. On January 1, 2008, Kelly wrote to me to scream me that the film was to be released for theatrical showings and the DVD release was some time in the future. She wanted to know if I had places to effect my review and of course I did and the film was on its plot to me. I am proud to say that all of the approach hype is impartial and the movie is quite an experience, one that no one should miss. “Variety” hailed the film as “crowd glorious…so racy…so intimate and fascinating”. It is also attractive,” wrenching and tender”.

“Praying with Lior” is a documentary that introduces Lior Leibling or as he is also called “the minute rebbe”. Lior has Down syndrome and he has spent his whole life praying. Many feel he is a spiritual genius while others feel that he is a “vessel that contains everyone’s unfilled wishes and expectations”. Lior’s mother died when he was only six but her words quiet fly over him. The dichotomy we sight here is that everyone who knows Lior knows that he is cessation to G-d but Lior is also a burden, an embarrassment, a best friend and an inspiration. Each of his family members has an belief of him. When Lior begins to come by end to Bar Mitzvah age, we hear from various people who provide us with some insight about him. It is at this point that the movie presents some difficult questions such as who really talks to G-d and what is a disability. The aim of the movie is to ogle at and change the map people with disabilities are regarded and received by communities of faith.

The society in which we live adores perfection. Individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities are dismissed and discriminated against almost everywhere. The faith communities should be the places where they should be most welcomed and from where the most comfort should be derived but they do not necessarily catch them with commence arms. The film attempts to bring about change in the plan the individual is valued by society and the narrative of Lior suits that purpose well because it shows that every person can produce some kind of contribution regardless of how special he is. Lior shows us that his presence enhances everyone else’s religious experience and as fabulous as Lior’s Bar Mitzvah was for him, it was also astounding for everyone else.

Everyone and every community has the suitable to grow and connect spiritually as well as to advance the highest level of potential and this will happen when faith communities are inaugurate to all individuals. The impact of Lior’s spirituality shows unprejudiced this. “Praying with Lior” looks deeply at faith in the trusty world omitting the concepts of proselytization and condecesension. Lior, who is a rabbi’s son, is considered to be a spiritual genius, His prayer is noteworthy and he professes a cessation connection with G-d.

Ilana Trachtman, the director of this extraordinary film manages to steal the family dynamic of Lior’s family where he is not the only entertaining person. Lior’s mother, like his father was a rabbi but she died of cancer when Lior was 6. His father remarried and presented to Lior and his three siblings a novel mother who was dedicated to the children. Lior’s older sister is in college, his brother, Yoni, who is in high school says he is Lior’s best friend. The youngest child, Ben, does not appear. Lior is very special, He may have Down syndrome but he functions at an exceptional level and seems very sparkling for his age. But he is also stubborn and has a speech defect. What really makes him special is his adore “to daven”, to pray. He seems to feel G-d all around himself but will not retort questions about it. His brother states, “I don’t know if there is a G-d, but if there is, Lior is closer to Him than anyone I know”.

We behold Lior as he makes preparations for his Bar Mitzvah. Three hundred people serve the ceremony and Lior really gives them something to glimpse. His name means “my light” and to those who know and appreciate him, that is objective what Lior is. It seems as if Lior has prepared for this day during all of his thirteen years. His dad, Mordechai, noticed that when Lior was only three that he had a special talent for prayer. He wanted every day to be Shabbat because he loved the Sabbath so considerable. His parents were surprised at their son’s spirituality.

Lior has Down syndrome but it is not what defines him. It is his special sense of faith that makes Lior so special. His life is the sum of the values of heart and soul in a culture where “accomplishments of the mind are usually valued above all else”.

We have a film which was inspired by the prayers of a disabled child and how his impact on the community, in turn, inspired a campaign for social justice. Lior is not a fully integrated member of his religious community but, rather, he is renowned as a spiritual genius because of the plot he prays.” Praying with Lior” is a recent experience–it breaks and warms the heart at the same time. In the film, Lior creates an respond to the wish of his behind mother by making a site for himself in his community and thereby becomes an example for all of us. The movie challenges our beliefs about who speaks to G-d while it illuminates Lior’s pleasing spirituality, his station in the community and his family’s trot toward healing. What a fair and remarkable film!

I wanted to look this movie because I have a child with Down Syndrome and I am Jewish. In the kill it was a tale of a family and of adore. I strongly recommend it for all.

It was in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town that Frank Capra perfected the blend of comedy and social commentary that would become his trademark. The screwball comedy was glorious rather than frantic and the social elements of Robert Riskin’s ravishing screenplay are handled in an even-handed manner that earned Capra the second of his three Acadamy Awards for Best Director. Both Gary Cooper as the tuba playing no nonsense Longfellow Deeds and Jean Arthur as the reporter who exploits him until she falls for his goodness are fantastic in this accurate Capra classic.

Longfellow Deeds (Cooper) lives in the microscopic town of Mandrake Falls where he makes a living writing greeting card poems and spends his free time playing the tuba. He is less than enthused when a bunch of expansive city attorneys prove up at his door to stutter him he has fair inherited 20 million dollars from a relative he never met. The law firm of Cedar, Cedar, Cedar and Budington impartial want him to notice over his power of attorney and Deeds goes to the city with them mainly so he can derive a see at Grant’s Tomb.

Deeds is unprejudiced and superb but no pushover and his initial reluctance about the space proves wise as everyone wants to mooch off of Deeds and fabricate a fool of him at the same time. Deeds gives as genuine as he gets and wins over the crusty Cornelius Cobb (Lionell Stander) to his plan of doing things but can’t collect around the draw a sure Louise Bennet is mocking his every escapade in the papers, making him study a fool and a country bumpkin.

But Deeds knows it doesn’t matter when he meets the sweet Mary Dawson (Jean Arthur), a lady in afflict who becomes his constant companion. Deeds no longer has to go off by himself like he did relieve home and talk to an imaginary girl because his dream girl has finally appeared for steady. He tells Mary that she makes up for all the fakes he’s met and writes a poem to her telling her how distinguished he loves her. The quandary, of course, is that Mary Dawson and this Louise Bennet who has christened him the Cinderella Man in all the papers are one and the same.

Arthur is astonishing as the cynical reporter who slowly realizes that Longfellow is superior, straightforward and fair. She realizes it is the viewpoint of everyone else that is distorted. Before she can score to him to produce her confession, however, Cobb breaks the unpleasant news to Deeds and his faith in everything is lost. He is ready to pack it up and head support to Mandrake Falls until a starving farmer breaks into his home and gives Deeds an view. It is the depression and Deeds’ notion to give those down and out a chance to fend for themselves and catch aid on their feet will choose evey penny he has, which is honest what he wants.

But the same attorneys who courted him before, now try to prevent the valid Deeds from doing a well-behaved deed and attempt to have him declared insane. It is the last straw for Longfellow, who shuts down completely, refusing to even defend his actions at his hearing. It is only when in an outburst from Arthur he learns she really does like him that he comes alive and gives them what for. As Cobb says earlier in the film, “lamb bites wolf!”

This is another huge Capra film that shows it is the “average” fellow who really represents our values and mores as a people and a country, while titillating us like no other director could. In addition to the constant joke about the name Budington throughout the film, because Deeds can’t derive a rhyme for it, it is also an “in” joke; the new anecdote adapted by Riskin was written by Clarance Budington Kelland!

Cooper and Arthur are memorable together and you will definitely catch choked up when she reads Longfellow’s poem about her on the steps of her apartment. Arthur does, because the words he has said earlier to a group of published poets making fun of him echo in her heart: “I guess it’s alright to wound someone as long as you don’t care how distinguished you injure them.”

Sony is putting out this newly remastered edition which has audio commentary, a featurette, the trailer, and vintage ads. The veil art looks the same but is in color this time, making an pleasing prove for film buffs. I serene have an older TV and really saw nothing harmful with the previous editions of this astonishing classic, not being that picky, so will leave this set to those more superb in regards to the technical aspects.

If all the mammoth Capra classics were represented by a vase beefy of red roses, this would be the one white rose in the center. It is flawless and pure, and represents everything that was special about the films of the first director allowed to have his name above the title. After seeing this film, you’ll know why.

This is “Capra-corn” at its most sublime as this 1936 comedy is tranquil one of the legendary director’s best works due primarily to the proper, career-defining performances of Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur. In the 1930’s and 40’s, Frank Capra’s oeuvre was the humanistic describe, inspirational to the current folk reeling from the Enormous Depression and later World War II. Written by his frequent (and later quite embittered) collaborator, Robert Riskin, this was his first film fully in this direction after his Oscar-winning success with the quintessential runaway heiress comedy, 1934’s It Happened One Night. It’s inviting to know that Capra only made this film because he could not launch production on the far more ambitious Lost Horizon as scheduled and fit this in only when Cooper became available for the title role.

Cooper portrays Longfellow Deeds, a young poet and volunteer fireman in a slight Vermont town who suddenly inherits $20 million, a sizable fortune at the time, from a distant uncle who died in an automobile wreck in Italy. Having never been outside of his hometown, Deeds is thrust into the limelight and moves to Manhattan to choose care of his uncle’s estate and related business interests. The first half has all the trappings of a “fish out of water” status (which Capra beautiful mighty perfected with this film), but it doesn’t grasp Deeds long to figure out that the people around him are not as exact as they want him to believe. One exception, he believes, is Mary Dawson, a small-town girl looking for a job before she faints from hunger. He falls in worship with her not realizing that she is really ace reporter Babe Bennett out to land a juicy newspaper fable about Deeds’ “Cinderella Man” exploits. Tired of the selfish cynicism surrounding him, Deeds gives away his fortunes to set a program to abet unpleasant farmers. In response, his advisors attempt to have him save away for insanity.

Previously a stoic straight arrow in primarily westerns and female-oriented weepies, Cooper emerges here as a multi-dimensional leading man with a deft comedy touch, while the throaty-voiced Arthur (in a role abandoned by no less than Carole Lombard) shows her natural élan as a tough newspaperwoman who discovers her vulnerability thanks to Deeds’ magnanimous gestures. It’s no wonder these two returned to Capra’s hands in subsequent features – he in Meet John Doe, she in You Can’t Choose It With You and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The pleasurable supporting cast is headed by Lionel Stander as Deeds’ confidante (a role similar to the agent he played in the 1937 A Star Is Born) ; H.B. Warner as the sympathetic Assume May (who would later return to Capra for Lost Horizon as the wizened Chang and for It’s A Fantastic Life as the drunken druggist who slaps George on his deaf ear) ; and Douglass Dumbrille as the obnoxious Cedar. The remastered 2008 DVD has a scene-specific commentary track, fairly entertaining, from the director’s son, Frank Capra, Jr., who is also featured in a ten-minute short about the film. Several vintage trailers of the senior Capra’s films are included though surprisingly not one for Deeds.

Im an a astronomical fan of the Coen brothers and their work. Fargo and Barton Fink are by far two of my popular movies ever made, and the brothers are on my list of all time well-liked directors. Their films are shaded and droll and some are very well written and shot. They have a style that separtes them from the norm of most Hollywood directos/writers and it has shown succesfull over the years giving them the nickanme “Hollywoods two headed director”. I have been putting buying most of their films however for a long time because of costs (Ultimatley I would have liked to retract all of their films) . This is a immense box site for those who have patiently waited like me, or are unprejudiced getting into Coen films. Granted I already owned two of the films, but I objective passed them on to my dad, who has never previously seen any of their films and now is enjoying them himself. The strong points are indeed Fargo, Barton Fink and Raising Arizona. Blood Simple was the brotehrs first film and is on its maintain a terrific debut. The Coens contrivance heavily from film noir and black comedy to form their films unusual. Many might complain tremendous Coen films such as The Tall Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou? are not included, but is simply because they dont fit the chosen selection. And those are the only two other Coen films I would recommend one rep to have a reach complete Coen Brothers collection.

As for the film quality, they seem to be the same prints as the individually sold dvds and there are no extra features other than what has previously been released. The label of course is very reasonable (averaging $8-$9 a disc) and comes in thin jewel cases with a rather nice box.

The Coen brothers — Joel and Ethan — burst onto the scene with 1984’s “Blood Simple”, a slow-moving noirish crime drama that expanded the universe of those films in ways most Americans were not familiar. For one thing, it wasn’t obvious accurate away what the crime was. Second, it wasn’t sure who the crimial was. Third, as that guy stated in one of the film’s expansive lines, “Where’s my jacket? ” indicated the complete irony every character found himself facing in this very unique production.

And thus began the career of two of America’s most renowned filmmakers from the past 25 years. The Coen brothers grew up in Minneapolis and show a very Seinfeld-esque Midwestern understanding in their films, even those that rob spot in unnamed grand cities including the oddball mobster movie “Miller’s Crossing” or “Barton Fink”, which begins in Original York and moves onto Los Angeles.

The latter film — always one of my celebrated Coen brothers’ works — was almost completely misintrepreted by critics when it arrived in 1991. None could identify the definite symbolism that it was about a conflicted playwright (John Turturro) who took his broad success from Current York’s theater community and went West to become a screenwriter in Hollywood, where he encounters all sorts of unfriendly including the Devil incarnate. Even during all these very unMidwestern transacations, the Coens stayed honest to their upbringing and brought hardworking pull yourself up by your bootstraps elements to their movies, where every hero was challenged by the novel, recent and sometimes even the insurmountable. They did this even when mixing film metaphors as they so often do.

The greatest advantage of this package is it includes none of their later higher gloss but emotionally empty movies with George Clooney. It I was the one packaging this, I’d have deleted “Raising Arizona” and added “The Astronomical Lebowski”, a better comedy and a film that features a powerful better cast than “Arizona”. But that’s miniature potatoes because, for less than $35, you have catch a handful of the Coens’ best early films for home enjoyment anytime you want, including their enormous masterpiece “Fargo”, an American Film Institute top 100 movie that takes status in their hometown and is based on events that really happened.

So don’t end too remarkable time if novel filmmaking, clever writing, improbable character acting, and originality are assets you discover in entertainment. Consume advantage of one of the offers Amazon Marketplace provides you to pick up this package for a very shapely stamp and bring treasurable art into your home for consumption anytime you want.
